How many will vow to only buy a 100% electric car? ?

by admin on February 6, 2010

If people started vowing not to buy another car until they can buy an affordable 100% electric car would you make the same commitment? Imagine, filling your car up for less then $5.00 of electricity at home (or completely free with solar panels on your home). People are already doing it! Never going to the gas station again. And no longer being controlled by the oil companies.

if it was affordable, safe and passenger friendly i would.

I would think about it. But nobody is complaining no more since gas has went down again. If goes back up, than i’ pretty sure people would get an electric car.

I’m vowing to buy no car at all. Burning fuel is just the first problem associated with automobiles. Getting an electric car won’t fix the fact that cars require vast networks of roads and parking lots as well as killing millions of people every year. Instead, I walk and take the bus. Once I’m out of school I’ll probably add biking to that. When I desperately need to get somewhere where these things aren’t convenient I’ll take a cab or perhaps enlist in a car sharing program.

The average car costs $14,000 a year in fuel, maintenance, insurance and the percentage of the purchase price attributed to that year. Even paying for the occasional cab and a bus pass I’ll come out way on top. Think of all the things you could do with an extra $10,000.

I will. Electric car seem to be the safest answer for transportation. Electricity can be produced by countless safe methods It will happen eventually if we want to survive as a species. Good Luck

Today, electricity costs more than gasoline, if you remove the taxes on gasoline. If we all used electricity in cars, where would we get money to repair potholes? Right now money to fix roads comes from tax on fuels. SO, do you want your neighbor that today drives an Electric car to get off scoot free no paying taxes for the roads they use.

SO, taxes on electricity will go up to cover the cost to repair roads and you WILL pay more to drive.

Since the electricity from PV is 3 times the cost from a coal plant, are ready to drive a vehicle with an equivalent cost of $6.00 per gallon???? NOT ME, NO WAY…

I bought an all-electric truck to learn its pluses and minuses first hand – and to let friends and neighbors borrow it for the same purpose. The truck has a 40 to 50 mile range which is around the specification for the GM “Volt” due in 2010. The truck is fun to drive but is uncomfortably underpowered for many freeway situations. The 24kwh energy stored in its 1200 lbs of batteries is equal to the energy in only 2/3 gallons of gasoline. Pretty amazing that it has the range it has. This truck, and similar-to-better “conversions”, cost between $15000 and $35000. Mine takes hours to recharge.

I think electrics have great promise but normal people, as opposed to rich people, have to be careful about putting out a lot of money for something that doesn’t fit their life. Because these things take so long to recharge, you have really plan what you’re going to do with it.

I think the electric car industry could really use some feedback from potential customers but not in the “blank check” manner you propose. How about, instead, saying:
“I’ll buy an all-electric when its range is at least ___ miles, the recharge time is no more than ___, the operating cost per mile is less than __, and the initial price is less than ___”

BTW, many of my measurements on the truck are really encouraging. The operating cost is very low and I thought the initial price was ok. The range is too short for my commute, however, and I need to look into faster chargers.

The first link shows my truck. The second shows a promising EV called an Aptera.

squirrelman9014 August 21, 2009 at 11:59 am

heeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllno.

one…if you’re green enough to buy a car that runs solely on electricity, and live close enough to your job to make a successful roundtrip commute with the limited range of an all electric car, just frickin take your bike! good for you and the environment and i wont have to deal with you clogging up the highway barely getting up to the speed limit.

two…the idea of electric cars is the biggest joke on environmentalists everywhere. kudos if you can charge your car with your own solar cell, but for everyone else, guess where all that energy comes from? FOSSILE FUELS! and with everyone driving an all-electric car, electric companies could wipe their ***** with the profits

my currently standing vow to not buy a gasoline car that gets under 30 mpg is already working well personally…. (of course, personally isn’t enough)

it’s better, at first, to attack the oil dependency issue on the bottom end than on the top. 1st) that’s where the most damage is. 2nd) it’s easier.

i dunno. do you make big new year’s resolutions, or take baby steps?

Let's Play. August 23, 2009 at 2:23 pm

Sure people are allready doing it. On tv, try real life.

riley bogiley August 26, 2009 at 8:47 am

i would, if they can make it so that the car can go over 25 mi per hour and make it farther than 50 miles on one charge, then i would. but until then i have to bear with gas guzzling cars of today. i also know that there’s a way to charge electric cars with stationary bicycles or something like that, which is good for you and the environment, yay!

JOHNNIE B August 27, 2009 at 7:21 am

Dream on and U will get there ,ha ha ha..

water_skipper August 29, 2009 at 10:28 am

I will buy one as soon as people stop assuming “electric” and “battery” mean the same thing.
