Do you have any tips or advice to offer?

I want to start a homestead when I finish college but I really haven’t the faintest idea of what to do. How long would it take and how much would it cost to buy an acre of land along the south shore of Lake Superior and build a 20′x20′ log cabin (with loft, outhouse, and shed)? If I started work in early spring and spent all of my spare time on it, would I have enough food canned/dried and wood stacked up for the winter? What would be the most ecologically friendly way to heat my home and have some electricity… like how much would solar panels cost? Would it be wise to have a cellar?

I really do not know much about all of this, but I would like to know if it is something a person just out of university (I’m very good about saving my money and my parents are paying for my tuition) can afford, or if I’d best get an apartment and work on the homestead for a few years before moving in.

Where can I purchase a residential wind turbine, preferably horizontal in the Chicago area?

I just moved into a split level home in a suburb of Chicago. I was thinking of either installing solar panels or horizontal wind turbines on the roof of my porch. Any help in finding companies for this would be appreciated, I am more interested in wind then solar being that Chicago is pretty far north (little sun in the winter) and known for our wind.

what kind of equipment or accessories to produce solar power that i can use in my home?

what im really looking for is a list of items so i can power something in my house but also understand how it works. if you want to shoot for something to power, I have a fan in my room. what do i need to power the fan with the lights on in the summer? 3 bulbs at 40 watts and the fan on.
what about during the night(?), do you need a battery?

It blows moistened air down through the house’s vents, which are near the ceiling, and out a few slightly openned windows or doors (to create a breaze).

l am looking for information on it and have found allot but really I am looking for information on regulation, pricing, how much is necessary to generate enough energy for the average home ect.

How do I find how much or how many Panels I need 4000sq ft house.Where do I look and what do I ask.. I want to be off the power grid for as much as I can I live in a log home and am trying to seal all leaks so winter will be warmer.We have cent heat but use fire place at night and mid day wake up we use cent heat.

I broke my clients solar light.hes bee client 2 yrs.
i only broke one and i think he notice 3 days later.i’ts been 2 weeks he has not said anything .i bought some new ones already.and installed them in the lawn .I knock his door to tell him what happend but he was not their.so i left the lights installed and tooked off home.

what should i do if i see him next time i go their .or tell him.

What is a good web site to check out for solar power for a home. I’m thinking about having solar power added to my water heater and to my furnace to cut down on gas usage. Maybe eventually to my lighting circuits. I want to have an idea of what the costs are and what the savings will be.
